Why satellite connections will never be mainstream
Published on December 4, 2003 By KarmaGirl In Internet
I will try to be as polite as possible with this article, but I must say, I'm a bit ticked off at this point. Please also keep in mind that I work at a software development company and do customer service and tech support. Our products are distributed mainly electronically and we offer subscription services. So, I am not exactly an impatient newbie to this type of stuff. And, going into this, I knew that satellite service was far from perfect......I just didn't realize how far......

I have Direcway satellite as my internet connection. Why? Because they are the only "broadband" that I can get. I can either have dial-up, or pay the big bucks to have satellite. There is no cable or DSL available at my house.

So, we got Direcway, which was a total pain to actually get somebody out to install, and we had to do a lot of the work ourselves, but not having to use dial-up was something that I was looking forward to.

In the first 3 months, I had to contact tech support 3 times for various reasons (always something on their side. Once they even claimed that the center that I am served by was hit by lightening). So, that was about 4 days that I did not have service (no credit given) and about 8 hours that I was on the phone with them getting it fixed.

Fast forward 3 months later. Day before yesterday, at about 9pm I noticed that the lights on my modem weren't blinking the way that they should be. I assumed it was just something that would fix itself (like it was too overcast and I just didn't know it). Last night, when I got home from work, it was still wrong. So, I called support. The first person that I spoke with didn't speak English very well, and ended up saying that I needed "advanced" support. When she "transferred" me, she hung up on me. (This is 1/2 hour into this ordeal). I call back. Speak to another person that doesn't speak English well and I have a hard time understanding what numbers he is saying. 116 and 160 sound identical when he says them, and I have to ask him to break down the number each time he says one so that I can understand it. He can't help and transfers me to advanced support. I sit on hold for half an hour (We are now 1 hour and 15 minutes into this).

Advanced support says that I need to update my software. I guess they updated their drivers to "improve" performance, but in reality, it made a whole lot of people lose signal strength due to the signals changing to work with the new driver. This is a wonderful thing since I don't have internet connection. So, it takes him a bunch of time to set up a dial-up account for me. Luckily, I have two phone lines in my house, so I could use the other one. I get dialed up on their service and try to get the file that he said that I needed (which is setting on an ftp site). I can't get it through their site. It can't find the source. I try to ftp through a command line- it times out. I try to grab it from the ftp site directly. It times out. He asks: "Do you usually have problems with dial-up? Do you have any idea what might be wrong?" Now, I have been on the phone with support for over two hours at this time. I wasn't in the mood. What I really wanted to say was: "Think about that, Jack-ass. This is *your* dial-up which is trying to connect to *your* ftp site! How the hell am I supposed to know what's wrong?" Instead I said: "I have no idea since I have never used this dial-up account, since it's through your providers...."

So, to make a long story even longer, my satellite is still not working, but I now have dial-up. I had to download the file that I need for home through work. I still don't know if it will fix my problem. I wasted *all* my free time yesterday on it. (well, 2/3 of it, anyway) and I really don't want to waste any more time on it. I was on the phone so long that my dog was getting mad at me.

So, while I was on dial-up yesterday, I checked my email (which I usually don't do from my DirecWay account because it has a hard time finding the mail server). It has an email notice from 11/23 that says that they have a new "update" out and you could enter some drawing if you updated before sometime in January. What it really should have said is: "Update within the next 10 days or forget being able to connect, sucker!" If their drivers are so important, don't you think that they should have some "auto-update" reminder for them? Like MS, Norton, Stardock, etc. do? (and, their updates are not typically "critical"). Can you imagine ATI emailing you a notice that says to update your video driver, then within two weeks you can no longer use your computer because your video card wouldn't work?

So, I can only assume that, by the time they get their act together, and quit having a totally flaky system, DSL and cable will be available in the areas that typically are using satellite. Either that, or people like me, will get so frustrated that they will go back to dial-up when their term is up. Who wants to spend so much money on a flaky, poorly supported product?

For the reasons above, Direcway gets a two coffee cup rating. They *really* need to get their act together!

Ditto your Direcway satellite experiences, I have had similar: started out to be reasonably good performance for only three days for me, and then it is now slower than dial-up (web pages load anywhere in 10 seconds to a minute, usually at the high end). My issue with them is this is NOT broadband connectivity - -no way, no how! I do not perform file transfers (very infrequently, generally software patches) so I don’t understand why after three days I went from only latency issues to “old, broken legged dog” performance.

Anyhow, the best approach in my opinion is an offensive involving not only the BBB, but also your state attorney general’s office (fraudulent or misleading promotion of their services) as well as the federal FTC and FCC (regulating fair trade and communications).

AR-15, I wish I could get Cable- but I can't, which is the whole reason that I have satellite. My only other option is dial-up. (No DSL out here, either)

This sounds just like I wrote it. Direcway is the worst thing I have ever gotten into.

I live in a rural area. I have had Direcpc\way since about 97-98 when it first started.i ahve had little problem. I have had service when my tv sat was down.I have been happy with it abliity to down load info (5GIG) in good time, watch movies, and speeds of 1000. the only things I have had issue with is it is more expensive then cable, The 6000 is not a vast improvement over the other model, but I like the ablitity to go from computer to computer with no software, and tech support can be difficult because of the ablity of many of the techs command of engish. If any of you out there have had slowing of browsing or slow download check for proper settings, your fire wall settings, or virises.I have had the slowdowns because of these issues. If you need support, and get a non english tech, politly ask for one, and they will get you one.

Anyone that says good things bout Dway must be paid by the company. I've had it 2 weeks now and very pissed. From the people that put it in to the online and phone help to it just being slow when you use up your bandwith to it costing to much.
Wish I had researched it more they are on the BBB's shitlist.

As I was considering buying direcway, after reading the experiences that people have been having with not only this product but the appalling way they are being treated by "customer circus", I will look at another product. Wake up American companies. People in America speak english and so should the people that represent your companies.

Yes Direcway sucks! Over 22 years as a computer and network specialist - I'm sure they dupe a lot of people into thinking it is thier own computer or their own fault something isn't quite right but the fact is there are many problems with their system and many bottlenecks. Also it is roughly equivalent to a 9600 baud to 14.4k modem (remember the 80's modems) for speed if you are on a secure web site. Time to load my secure web page with Satellite is about 30 to 32 seconds. Time with a 28.8k connection is 10 seconds! Time with DSL is less than 1 second. Enough said....

I saw some posts here saying that satellite internet access is slow, sucks etc.. You are right if you are talking about companys using old recycled DVB video technology. (Directway for example) DVB technology was never designed for IP and never should be. It was an afterthought by some companys who saw an upcoming market and wanted to compete in it. Sure, I bet its possible to go to the supermarket with your mate riding on the handlebars holding the grocerys. But hey I would'nt be too surprised if you started dropping things either (like data packets) DVB is great for watching TV , but thats about it.

To do it right, you need to use the right tool for the job. A TDMA system is designed for situations, from hand portable use in a downtown office to a mobile user traveling at high speed on the freeway. A TDMA system also supports a variety of services for the end user, such as voice, data, fax, short message services, and broadcast messages.

Beware though, this is a business class solution and is priced accordingly. To see how to do satellite internet "The Right Way"

Interesting story:

I also do not have the option of DSL or Cable so I was one of the early customers of DirecPC one-way satellite service. I purchased the kit on the internet and installed it myself for about $125.00, no problem! about as easy as installing a TV dish. The system worked well through several software upgrades and I still have the old system.

One complaint. The two way system was delayed by about one year and was not user installable as advertised. I was again an "eary adopter" and was able to negotiate free installation. Hardware costs about $300.00, my roof mount already in place, the installer had about a 15 minute job including tuning. I pay $49.00 per month.

The service is very reliable, I lose connection for 10 to 15 min with a large T storm, snow or rain reduce the signal strength but service is not interuppted. I had one hardware failure of a module up on the dish and it was promptly mailed to me with a postage paid return box for the old module. No questions asked.

Software patches/upgrades are free and announced via the Direcway service. Not an online update but I dont want that.

I am looking forward to the new 6000 system which does not require a dedicated PC/server, just waiting for the price to go down.

The Direcway service and equipment is very good, dont buy from a "partner" buy only directly from hughes!!!!

Several upgrades and services are available only to direct customers, I was lucky not smart.

I have two complaints:

One has been made about the "outsourced" non-technical support who do not speak or understand english, are working from a script, and are VERY reluctant to refer to a real engineer. Be persistant, when you get to the engineers they are very good.

Two is that their software is for Windows only. I HATE MICROSOFT!!! all flavors of windows SUCK!!!

My only true justification for spending the bucks for the 6000 is to finaly get my home network Microsoft Free, Huray!!! I use 4 different distros of Linux and all three Solaris for Intel distro's on my Novell Netware 6.5 network. All work together beautifully.

P.S. satellite communications are slow with the Microsoft TCP/IP stack until you tweak the registry or just kill Windows altogether and get Linux

Mandrake 10 is awesome!!

My family and I live in a rural area. Our only choices are dial-up or DirecWay. We have both, and they both suck equally, only DirecWay sucks AND is also expensive. Calling customer service (what a funny name for an outfit that gives no service and does so in Hindi) is an ordeal. The 4 or 5 people (all whimsically named Paul or Bill or Dave) who answer the phones really need a crash course in English. The connections break down, they're about as slow as dial-up, but did I mention how expensive the service is? Surely that makes it all worth it. I'm not sure who to complain to; don't know if the FTC has jurisdiction over these people or not. I do hope there are enough complaints to get these bastards out of business, even if that means I'll be without a slow and expensive system.
