Stardockian

a what?

We have a term around here for employees of Stardock. We call ourselves Stardockians. Makes sense, right?

Well, one may wonder what a Stardockian is. In a current blog by Zoomba (who is becoming a Stardockian) I mentioned that he already seems like one.

Stardockian is more than just an employee. We have a whole company culture around us that makes us a bit of a "family". For instance, I was just in a car accident. "Stardock" sent flowers to my house and many, *many* people showed their concern for me. That doesn't happen everywhere you go.

We also have managers who try to manage in the most reasonable sense possible. We try to let people succeed on their own, and only step in to put the smack down when things get *way* out of control. We try to let our employees take ownership and pride in their work.

We don't work nights and weekends. If tech support works a Saturday, they get a day of choice off, and even the game team doesn't have to sleep under their desks (even in crunch time).

On a different level, our whole company tries to have fun along with being productive. We have people who play board games together at lunch. We close up shop and go to movies when a really good release comes out. We try to remember Birthdays and other events. And, we know each other pretty well. Above all, almost all of us have a great sense of humor and try not to take anything too seriously.

So, being a Stardockian is something really great! It means that you work with a bunch of talented, caring, and crazy people. It means that you like going to work and that you feel that you make a difference. It's just too bad that more companies can't be like this, as the world would be a much happier place!

I worked for a company like that. I miss it. But circumstances changed, and they were driven out of the market. And I did not want to relocate.

Glad your feeling a bit better. Sounds like a workplace that SHOULD be a model for other companies with under 50 employees. Would be impossible to maintain such a special workplace with more people I think.

I'm not sure. But, I still think that larger companies could work on their company culture and try and grow at a controlled rate. Too many are concerned with only the bottom line, though.

Ditto on what Elie said. It would be hard to maintain that level with too many people.

Your company does sound like a great place to work. I like it when a company is like that. I've worked with one or two who have been like that and it's really great. It all boils down to one thing though, the person in charge. If you guys who are in charge weren't great leaders and really good people, you wouldn't have that type of affinity you do - and this is not kissing up! I speak from experience.

Take my hubby and I for example, we work for the same organization. My experience is like yours, my dept is great, we have a great working environment. His has some great employees who are wonderful and friendly people. However when it comes to the people who are in charge, they are jerks with a capital J! They make their employees feel like crap a 100% of the time and some of the things they do is so assinine that it just makes you wonder. They make going to work a real pain.

The work culture is one of the biggest draws for me. I've worked an assortment of jobs since high school and the people I work with on a day-to-day basis are always what made a job either suck or rule. I've worked places where everyone takes every moment of the day 100% seriously and can't laugh at anything, and those jobs are just unbearable.

I figure if I'm going to spend the majority of my time in one place with a fairly set group of people, I want to be able to have a certain degree of fun.

Oh so glad you're feeling better

and whatta place to earn a living! people have to work at making it work too. That doesn't just happen!

A task well worth it though because then it's a good support system!

Well I can confirm everything Karma said, being a Stardockian myself! I love the work environment here and really do enjoy working for this company. Everyone really does get along here and the management is so much more relaxed and approachable than any other company I have worked for. Not overbearing at all. It really does boost our productivity and work morale by doing fun things like movie afternoons and b-day parties like Karma mentioned. Making the work environment a fun place to be clearly makes the employees happy and productive! Who wants to work for a company they hate?
