OMG!!!!!!!!!! Weiner dogs!

They look SO much like Henry did when I bought him home.  Gawd, I miss that little dog. 

Can you jar up some of that puppy breath and send it to me? There's nothing in the world like it - it's one of my favorite smells.

Aw, Dachel puppies are my faves. Dachshunds seem to have the cuteness gene turned WAAAY up. Even as adults.

It's so you won't kill them when they chew up your shoes.  These dogs are partners in crime, and it's the first time that a dog chewed up a shoe.  The problem is, both of them did it.  sigh

I bet I could be a millionaire if I could figure out how to do that.  You just can't get mad at them when they look at you with those big brown eyes and breathe on you with their puppy breath.

 

The real 'yay' goes to the volunteers that take these dogs into their homes and find real homes for them.  If you ever decide you want a pet, please consider adopting from a rescue.  I was amazed at home many nice dogs they had.  I wish I could take them all home!

 

Yeah, that Chester is a real charmer.  He looks (and acts) almost exactly like our oldest Dachshund, Duke, who is 12 years old.  Duke has been a great dog, and I think Chester will be a lot like him.  Autumn, on the other hand, is insane.  She has way too much energy!

 

They don't ever seem to be "dogs".  The adults are more like old puppies.  I'm a total sucker for Dachshunds!

Yeah, they are actually both dapple, but Chester's markings are hard to see.  Autumn, on the other hand, has beautiful markings.  Their parents (I saw one and got a picture of the other) are very beautiful dogs, too. 

I just don't understand how people can treat them like that (puppy mill).  The Mom is quite young, but her belly just sags because she has had so many litters.  I really hope that she finds a quiet, loving home to live the rest of her life in.  It was amazing how sweet she was even after all the evil that she had lived through- she hadn't even been inside until she was rescued.

Those dogs are lucky to have you. The shoe; however, maybe not so lucky.

I've always got my pets this way. I've never ever paid money for one of my animals. My dog Quincy was left at the side of the road with a blanket at one year old. I can't in my mind wrap that up.

I'm not familiar with this breed of dog here. But I love the size (and cuteness) of them. I don't have any friends with a Dachshund. Can you give me from your experience the negatives and the positives of this breed?

They are awful cute Karma.
Negatives: they are generally fairly smart and stubborn so they are good at training their owners! Hard to walk in snow due to their distaste for cold bellies.
Positives: Smart and loyal, You never fear an attack by badgers!

Karma, Is it harder to monitor food intake for multiple dogs? I know that if your Dachsie gets overweight, back problems follow shortly.

 

Actually, this is the first shoe that I lost.  The other dogs never bothered my shoes.

To add to SSG Geezer's list:
Negatives: You have to train them not to dig.  They can become really Territorial if you let them, especially with food.  They will eat anything (they are a hound, after all) and will eat until they make themselves sick.  So, you have to ration their food and watch what they eat.  They also have a tendency to get too excited and pee on the floor.  They like to bark- especially at things that don't matter, like leaves.  They get scared easily, which usually is shown by being aggressive.  They can have back problems, though I have had 3 so far and none of them have had issues.

Positives: They are *so* lovable.  They are total lap dogs and love humans.  They are small (minis are about 10 pounds) so you can have a whole stack of them.  They are very much pack animals, and do well with other dogs and other animals. They are very protective of their people, even though they are small (they have big dog attitudes).  They are extremely smart dogs and are very social.  And as puppies, they are so cute and cuddly that you can barely stand it!

Actually, we have them eat out of their own bowls so that we know how much they eat.  Plus, they have different food (I have two senior Dachshunds on Senior formula, I have a 3 year old Welsh Corgi on adult, and the two pups on Puppy).

We've always referred to ours as a lap-and-a-half dog, 'cause he's so long.

Positives (just some more) - They are VERY good with kids. Ours went through us as kids and then several of my kids. They even used him to pull up on when they were starting to walk. Ear pulls, tail tugs, poor guy put up with it all. Not once did he snap at the kids.

Also, they are very much pack animals. Fortunately, their humans (notice, they think they're at the top of the heap) are included in that. When going into protective mode, they are some of the fiercest friends you can find.

Negatives - They can be a little high strung. IF they're raised with a family they can be very laid back. If they're raised by someone alone, or with only a couple, they get a little antsy around other people. It all goes back to their pack mentality. In this case, the pack is very small.

Overall, Dachshunds have been my favorite dogs (and we've had everything from a Chocolate Lab to Dachshunds in size over the years). And if they're used to snow, a Dachshund LOVES to run through it. They do love to run.

Some of my favorite memories of the different dachshunds we've had over the years (all 3 of them) is the way they love to run. Snow and leaves were the favorites of our first one. Of course, this was in Germany where snow and leaves were plentiful.

Oh well- gives me a reason to go shoe shopping!

Ok one more question. Do they stray at all or stay close to home? My mom had a hound dog that if escaped would be down the street in a heartbeat. Quincy is part hound but he doesn't leave the yard (except for the two or three storms I already wrote about) and is very loyal as well to his territory.

Ohhhh one more since I brought up storms. How do they do in T-storms? Snow isn't an issue because we're moving to FL but they sure do have their fair share of T-storms.

I love the idea of having a "lap" dog. I've always had bigger dogs. When I first got Quincy he used to try and get into my lap but he was really too big at 55 lbs.

Those are some gorgeous doggies! Such shiny coats too, they look very healthy!
