things are never easy

My husband and I are "do it yourself" kind of people. The main reason is that we are cheap, and the other is that we are very picky about how things are done.

Our house is not that old. It's not even 4 years old yet. But, there are things about it that I have hated from day one. I have a list. One of the top items that I had on my list was the kitchen sink. Nothing was broken with it- it was just ugly. It consisted of a builders grade stainless steal sink with baskets that were obviously mainly plastic with a metal finish (which was chipping off). Not my style at all, and it made me mad every time I looked at it.

So, I have decided that any home improvement that I make is going to last for the next 20 years. Everything that I buy has to be well made and in a timeless style. It also needs to be functional.

The stainless steal sink was small and shallow. Every now and then I need to bath one of the weiner dogs (we have three mini dachshunds). The sink is the best place to wash a weiner dog. Our sink was too small. The other think that drove me nuts was that every strainer that I had would fall sideways when it hit the drain. Since the sink was small and the drain was in the center of each bowl, straining stuff was always an issue.

So, I found a Kohler cast iron sink. It's bright white. This is what it looks like (except white) and I don't have quite as cool of a faucet:

It's big enough to wash a dog. It's much more stylish than the old one. And, due to it's shape and where the drain is, I can put a strainer in it without it falling over. Other nice thing- it's all Kohler quality. We even bought Kohler baskets. This sink rocks.

Of course, my husband had other words for the sink. It's very heavy (about 80 pounds) which made it difficult to install. It is also much different from our old one, so in the middle of installation, we found out that we needed more parts. The 2 hour installation turned into about 5 due to having to get parts and stop and swear a lot. I think it was worth it, though, because now he can concentrate on three more things in the kitchen- the light above the sink, painting the walls, and getting a new faucet....which looks like this:

(that is a Delta faucet)

Ah...the beauty of home improvement.......

The sink definitely gets a 5 coffee cup rating....I can even wash my coffee cup in it!
