I'm tired today.....I am *really* tired today.....
We decided to paint the kitchen over the weekend. We ended up staying up into the wee hours of the morning...not too bright since we had to get up at 5am and go to work...
Anyway, we have a 4 year old house, which was pretty much just painted the plain off white that all new construction seems to be in these days. However, I love color. I love vibrant, clean, bright color. The house of my dreams is not what most people would want, and, I don't care.
The colors that you choose to paint your house are very personal. Not everyone has the same taste in colors. Colors can have such emotion to them, so it's best that you really think about the room before painting it. That is why it took us 4 years to get around to painting.
My dining room got painted about a year ago. It's the color orange that you would get if you mixed a pumpkin with a cantaloupe. The first time that everyone sees it, they hate it, The second time they see it, they either love it, or will hate it forever. It's a warm color that brings out the oak color of our dining set and compliments the copper and brass light that hangs in the room. When my husband opened up the can of paint, he really questioned me. After he painted it, he wasn't sure if he liked it, the next morning he loved it. As he has said- "It's a complicated color that you need to understand to appreciate". His mother hated it when she first saw it. The last time she was over she said: "That is such a pretty room. I just love it!" It's weird. But, I have a feeling I will get the same response about the kitchen.
The kitchen started out as a simple project- replace the sink. We did that, then we replaced the faucet (as shown in previous articles). After looking at the "victorian" faucet, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Our countertops are a neutral blue-grey glacé. Our appliances are white (as is the sink) and the floor doesn't count because it's getting replaced soon. Our walls are now lemon yellow. It's not a dark yellow, but it is bright and clean. I also purchased an "antique rose" curtain for the window and bought matching border for it. Even though the border isn't up yet, the kitchen is how I thought it would be- the feel is of a 50's farm house that has updated appliances.
It's bright, it's happy, and people will hate it when they see it. It will grow on them, though. It's just how I want it.
