I'm home today sick (have strep throat) so I decided to finally write a couple articles. I just posted about
my corn stove: Corn Stove (shameless plug) and now I am writing about the birthday cake I made for my
daughter's Halloween themed birthday party last weekend.
Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited until the morning of her party to decorate it. So, it
was really a "do or die" type situation. I decided to try using Fondant to decorate with. As was pointed
out by my MIL, in a not so subtle way, fondant really doesn't taste that great. However, there is regular
frosting under it, so you can just peel it off. I was really going for the look, anyway. Typically, by the time
the cake gets served, the kids have eaten their piñata candy and half the adults are drunk, so does the taste
even matter at that time? I don't even like cake, so I really didn't care, anyway.
So, here is the front of "Barbie the Witch" (she had sparkles on the front, but they didn't show up well in
the picture):
And, here is the back:
It's far (very far) from being perfect. But, I think it was a good first try. I also had never made a Barbie cake
before. It took 3 cake mixes. She's made up of 3 stacked cakes that were baked in oven safe bowls, and then
they are sat on a regular 8" round cake as the base. All the cakes, except the base, had to be cut out in the center to
fit the (plastic wrapped) Barbie in. The grass has sour gummy worms, which the kids loved.
